Backpacking to Europe – Part 10: Clog Museum, Zaanse Schans

Previously

We were thinking of going out of Zaanse Schans because actually, we have booked a slot for a free walking tour at Amsterdam Centraal area (spoiler alert: we did not go for the free walking tour. We did our own walking tour). Nevertheless, it appeared that there were still much of Zaanse Schans that we have not explored and I was eager to let go of this beautiful place. We just have not had enough of Zaanse Schans.

Kami ingat nak keluar dari Zaanse Schans sebab sebenarnya, kami ada tempah free walking tour pukul 2.00 petang di Amsterdam Centraal (tapi nak dijadikan cerita, kami buat keputusan tak ikut pun tour tu. Kami jalan sendiri aja). Tapi, kami rasa tak puas di Zaanse Schans.

Free cheese samples.

So, we decided to continue walking along the small houses until we reached a cheese shop. It was a blessing because the weather was too brutal outside and the cheese shop provided a shelter for us to hide from the cold winter.

There were a lot of people inside, a lot of cheese and a lot of free samples. Being cheapskate, we did not buy any cheese but we tried almost all the free samples multiple times. In fact, when my favourite (smoked cheese) was being topped up, I was among the first to continue eating it for another round.

Jalan sikit, kunyah. Jalan sikit, kunyah. Sampaikan bila keju kegemaran aku (keju salai) dah habis, aku tungu sampai pekerja di kedai tu isi semula dan aku sambung mengunyah lagi.

Free samples!

The shop also has a kitchen area where we could see how a cheese is made. No one manning the area as it was automated but I could see how large the pot used to mix the ingredients were.

Before turning to this.

Feeling guilty, before exiting the shop, we bought a cheese sandwich at the small cafe area near the entrance. It was so delicious that I ate my wife’s portion of the sandwich too.

Next, we continued our walk towards the clog museum. The entrance is free and inside the museum, there are many informative boards telling about the history of the famous Dutch clogs as well as the history of clogs around the world. There are samples of other places’ clogs (including our own terompah) and at the end of the museum is a shop selling the clogs.

Selesai bahagian muzium, kami sampai bahagian kedai.

We admired the beauty of the clogs and looked at the various types of clogs being sold there. They even sell custom-made clogs which is made out of bare wooden clogs. I was thinking of buying one but I thought, it might be a waste since no one would wear it. So, I just took photos and more photos as souvenirs for me to remembered.

Just looking.
Bare wooden clogs.

We exited the museum and walked towards another side of Zaanse Schans, heading towards the exit. Since we wanted to explore the place, we did not retract our earlier path, instead we walked a different route.

Birds walking on the ice.

The place looked deserted and the weather had become extremely chilly. The small streams inside the area had frozen, ducks and birds could be seen walking comfortably on the thin ice.

We exited the area, crossed the bridge and turned right to see Zaandam area. We left behind memories of a pretty place called Zaanse Schans.

+++++

The cheese shop is located near the entrance of Zaanse Schans while the clog museum is located further up  after the ice cream shop. It is recommended to visit the cheese shop if you are a cheese lover as there are a lot of cheese there. As for the museum, it is worth a visit to know a little bit about the Dutch clogs. If you want, maybe can grab a pair too?
