Through formal education and experience I have learned not to carry the responsibilities that belong to other people. It’s not my responsibility to teach anyone, especially something they can easily access via books, articles, websites, documentaries and well informed movies/shows. That’s their work to do, not mine. When a university pays me to teach White people about white supremacy, then I’ll take on the responsibility to teach for compensation. More unpaid emotional labor by people of color is not the answer.

Whoah, thanks for taking on this subject. Most travel blogs are all rainbows and unicorns (besides mine; I include travel fails too)

This line captures it – “Racism within India is still very much alive. What I don’t get is why Indians can get so worked up about racism in the US but ignore racism in their own backyard?”

I’m Canadian and I’m finding the same “American” effect impact my community. The activism I’m seeing online, that I’m doing myself, is encouraging and long overdue, but a lot of it is still geared at American communities when we have our own issues with systemic racism. Indigenous communities in Canada have been persecuted since our country began with very little acknowledgement from our government. We have a lot of work to do, as do many countries.

This is a wonderful piece and incredibly eye-opening – thank you so much for sharing such personal thoughts.
