My partner (who is male) and I sometimes discuss the interesting dichotomies that arise when we think about traveling alone either as a woman or a man. We've both traveled a fair amount together, alone, and with other friends.

For instance, as a woman I may be able to make friends or get help easily while traveling because I am unthreatening, but that also means I am more of a target for scams or violence. As a man, he is approached much less by strangers and may have a harder time hitch hiking, but also less likely to be attacked or receive unwanted attention.

I think anyone can have issues with prejudice and being stereotyped when traveling (it's unavoidable), and while whatever gender you identify as may have something to do with the challenges you face, it's important to remember everyone will have difficulties of one kind or another. Male-led society overly warns women off independent travel to proliferate the myths that we are not capable of taking care of ourselves.

I travel alone and after I book my flight I always say what am I doing. Am I crazy? What makes traveling so wonderful is fellow travelers. The comriodery between travelers is amazing.People I have just met have helped me out of difficult situations. When I meet people in my hometown of Chicago that are traveling I am instantly their friend. Travel is such a wonderful experience. I say go,go, go.
