I’m As a Mexican, I don’t know how ‘puta’ keeps getting translated as ‘bitch’. ‘Perra’ (extremely offensive, do not say unless you mean to offend) = bitch. ‘Puta’= ‘whore’. I can’t speak for the Spanish, but in Mexico, when we say “puta” we mean it as an “you suck and fuck so much” and is considered very offensive.

Ahhh now I see reading Los commentaries that there are quite a few new palabrotas y que interesante que un joven pensaba que “hostia” era “Ostia”. Y que, con tiempo el significado , el atrevido de usar “hostia” haya desaparecido!
“Ostras” Solía Ser expresión para disfrazar “hostias”. Paula en NZ ( young adventuress in 1970’s haha)

Hi Liz
Nothing much has changed since I lived in Madrid in 1978-1980 then!! Everything you say rings true and reminds me of how hilarious. spanish swearing is!!! So different from Mexican and Latin American in their choice of palabrotas! These are absolute CLASSIC palabrotas! ( but I’ve never once heard a Latino say something like “ me Cago en la Leche ( de tu puta madre!) Aren’t there some new ones now ? After all why would young or any agnostic/atheists think “hostia” was a palabrota these days! Haha.

In Madrid before they hit you they ask "tu buscas leña?" "Are looking for wood?". Apparently you're asking, not for ostia, but some kind of wood.
And when they hit you they give you (te dan) "palos" as in sticks or planks.
