Liz, I’m from New Zealand but have lived overseas for years. In fact, married a Californian and my kids are essentially Americans, I thought I’d write my story for them and was looking up kiwi sayings…when I say chook will they know what I mean? And I found your blog. The photos are beautiful. I am currently living in Costa Rica where I’ve been for 33 years. But I still have my New Zealand passport….and all my family are still “down under”. I may return someday. And I will have to take a language course before I do. And fake my kiwi accent because I’ve lost it.

Oh! Kiwi is fun! You missed our fav, though… As young gals studying abroad in NZ we were scandalized when a cute farm boy asked us to lend him a rubber—right in class! Turns out the fellow was looking for an eraser!! We were further amused to learn that what we call speed bumps, our Kiwi pals called speed humps! Oh, gt in nz!

Hello, I see other people have commented on the Dave thing (No 23), however, it is totally wrong. In the context of the above advertisement the term “Mate” has various meanings, however, Dave does not mean dick. It is simply the man’s name and indicates that he is no longer their friend (probably because he killed his other friends due to driving whilst drunk – which is what the advertisement is about)
