In a 2007 interview about filming Lawrence of Arabia Peter O’Toole mentions that he was taught to ride a camel by K'tayfan (sp?) abu Tayi, a grandson of Auda abu Tayi. (As I dictate this, my i-phone voice recognition system insists on translating “Auda abu Tayi” as “Outer beauty”) Anyway, according to O’Toole riding a camel was, “... like riding a dragon, this huge great thing — it’s not like being on a horse: you can’t coast, you just bump; and nobody can ride a camel, not even the greatest bedouin: nobody can “ride” a camel — you just sit on top of the damn thing and hope to God he doesn’t fling you off.” Maybe that's why camel directors trot alongside on foot.
Great story -- thank goodness you weren't seriously hurt. Would live to visit Wadi Rum some day, but for now your story gave me a taste of what it would be like. Many thanks!

Thank you for sharing this! I was looking for information on how to mount a camel, doing research for my book, and came across this entry. Hilarious! I especially enjoyed the technical versus the practical information; the dichotomy between what you are supposed to do and what you actually do was very funny and certainly rang true! Thank you again!
